LAHORE, Jan 5: The Punjab Local Government Ordinance will be amended shortly for ensuring devolution of power to the lowest level in a true sense.

District Nazim Mian Aamir Mahmood told councillors after presiding over a meeting about improvement in solid waste management system at the Nazim’s House here on Saturday.

He said the Punjab governor had told him about the amendments in the ordinance when he brought his difficulties in running the government to his notice at a recent meeting.

Mian Aamir said the governor agreed with him in principle that there were flaws in the new system due to which the powers had not been devolved to the lowest level and the problems being faced by the people were not being solved.

He said the district city government was installing two new weigh bridges equipped with electronic cameras for automatic recording of the weight and monitoring the movement of the garbage lifting trucks. District Officer Rafiq Jatoi had been directed to issue route cards to the truck drivers mentioning the time of lifting garbage from different places as well.

He said he was aware of the shortage of sanitary workers in certain union councils. More sanitary workers would be placed there to overcome the shortage soon.
