KARACHI, Aug 21: The principal of Government College of Commerce and Economics was on Thursday wounded in a shoot-out between students of two rival groups on the premises of the college.
Police said activists of the All Pakistan Mohajir Students Organization and the Islami Jamiat Talaba had clashed with each over a dispute about installation of camps and party flags at the college.
They said the principal of the college, Prof Mohammad Aslam Khan, was wounded in the leg when he came out of his office. Some students were also injured during the clash.
They added that by the time a senior police office reached the college upon receiving information at the police helpline 15, the suspects had escaped.
The principal was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where the doctors decided to operate on him.
The Civil Lines police registered an FIR (78/2003) on behalf of the principal against unknown students. However, a statement issued by the IJT says that some outsiders belonging to their rival students’ organization were responsible for the attack on the principal.
BOYCOTT: The organizations of teachers and principals have decided to boycott academic activities at city colleges on Friday in protest against the attack on the principal of Government College of Commerce and Economics.
Condemning the attack, a spokesman for the College Principals’ Association demanded that the Rangers be deputed at all colleges in the city so that the educational institutions could be run without interruption.
He urged the government to take security measures to protect principals, teachers and students at colleges.
He added that a meeting of college principals would be held at Government National College on Friday at 11am.
The Sindh Professors and Lecturers’ Association, Karachi, also announced that it would observe a black day in colleges on Friday.
The principal of Government College of Commerce and Economics decided to keep the institution closed on Friday and Saturday. The decision was also endorsed by the executive district officer of colleges and district officer education, colleges, said a source.
