KARACHI: Three robbers stormed a bungalow in Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Friday morning and took away $20,000, gold ornaments and Rs50,000, officials said.

Six suspects were later rounded up as the police and robbery victims suspected involvement of ‘insiders’.

It was around 10.30am when the suspects entered the two-storey bungalow, situated in Gulistan-i-Jauhar’s Block-3, and went straight to a room where they collected $20,000, said Karachi-East SSP Dr Samiullah Soomro. The robbers then moved to another room where gold ornaments were placed, the officer said, adding that they collected three or four sets of gold jewellery and Rs50,000 from that room before fleeing.

“There were three families residing in the bungalow, but the three robbers did not face hindrance from anyone,” said the senior police officer.

In fact the door of the house was partly open, said SSP Soomro.

As they went straight to the rooms to commit the robbery, it seemed that they had ‘inside information’ about the cash and other valuables being kept there, he said.

The house owner, Dilshad, told the police that his brother-in-law, Zeeshan, who had recently arrived from the US, brought the money to purchase some property in Karachi. He told the police that it appeared that the robbers were ‘aware’ of it.

Taking notice of the robbery, Inspector General of Police A. D. Khowaja sought a detailed inquiry report from DIG-East Sultan Ali Khowaja and directed the SSP-East to ensure arrest of the culprits involved in it.

Subsequently, SSP Soomro visited the crime scene. The victims suspected that someone had leaked the information about the money, said the officer while speaking to Dawn.

“The police launched an operation in the adjoining slum areas and detained six persons for interrogation,” he added.
