MITHI: The newly-built resort and motel named after Rooplo Kohli — one of the great heroes of the 1857 rebellion against British rule in the subcontinent — was inaugurated on Saturday by Sindh Minister for Culture and Tourism Syed Sardar Ali Shah.

The resort comprising 26 rooms, 10 of them luxury suites, has been built on the foothills of Karoonjhar Hills, famous for their natural beauty, in Nagarparkar town.

Speaking to reporters and later addressing the inauguration ceremony, Mr Shah said that this resort was not only meant for promoting tourism in the Thar and Parkar regions, but for paying homage to the great freedom fighter, Rooplo Kolhi, who fought the British Raj valiantly and did no bow to the invaders until he, along with his brave soldiers, was executed in 1858.

The minister noted with pleasure that the construction of the resort was completed within six months, and expressed the hope that the museum being built would also be completed soon. He said that different rooms at the resort would be named after notables of the area who had rendered great services to the people of the region.

MPAs Dr Mahesh Kumar Malani and Dost Ali Rahimoon, PPP culture wing president Qasim Siraj Soomro and other notables of the area also spoke.

Director-general of culture Kaleem Lashari, Mujahid Hussain Shah, Sardar Khan Khoso, Abbas Khoso and officials of various departments were among those who attended the ceremony, which was followed by a musical programme titled ‘Rim Jhim musical night’.
