ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has stopped four universities from giving admissions to students in any degree programme, owing to academic irregularities and mismanagement.
These institutions include Preston Institute of Management Sciences and Technology, Karachi, Imperial College of Business Studies, Lahore, Global Institute, Lahore, and Al-Khair University, AJK.
“We banned the institutions from offering admissions in the recent pasts, but they are violating the ban, so we issued this warning today,” Chairman HEC Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed told Dawn.
He said that in addition to main campuses, their sub-campuses, branches or affiliated colleges had also been not allowed to admit students at any level in any programme.
The HEC chairman said complying with the directives of the prime minister, HEC review panels visited universities in 2016 across the country for review of quality assurance and governance practices.
The universities with unsatisfactory report were asked to overcome the deficiencies. However, the four institutions have still not complied despite reminders and, therefore, they have been asked to stop admitting students in all of their academic programmes.

I wonder so many illegal institutions are fleecing money and HEC only bothers to issue parents/students alert. Dear HEC ! your responsibility is more than that. You have to resort to legal action against all illegal institutions and campuses. And please think aobut geographical spread of the universities as well, rather than clustering varsities in big cities only.

These are universities. People aspiring to get at that level are expected to do their due diligence in every respect and be knowledgeable and alert enough to something even if it is not on TV.
Not that I am saying it should not be on TV, but take some responsibility too.

In 1996 I myself lost considerable amount of money on a similarly dubious university located on Kashmir road in Karachi due to lack of information that it was not recognised by HEC.

It's not about policies and regulations, these Universities refused for the bribe that HEC wants from each University before their affiliation/renewal/registration, etc. regardless of their quality of Education or campus.
It's all about money.

HEC should put LUMS on notice particularly its Humanities and Social Sciences division where students are supposed to go through a degree program with only one full time faculty member in sociology who summarily gets rid of all new hires, even those with foreign qualifications because she feels threatened by them. Politics rules and students complain of not being offered courses and graded arbitrarily without the criteria announced. It is a sham department that should be disbanded by HEC. I speak from personal experience and student input.

@WASEB I alerted HEC about the illegal practice at LUMS MGHSS about luring foreign faculty and after they moved getting rid of them on short duration due to departmental politics, so that the department is run with only one full time professor in sociology and students complain of quality and unavailability of courses only to be ignored and sanctioned by the VC. HEC determined that was the case but said they could do nothing because the university is private, even after I asked them to regulate so called private institutions so they don't facilitate national brain drain. HEC doesn't care they have relations with these big business, big name universities. The VC in the inquiry treated the HEC officer as his personal servant and didn't even bother to reply upon several requests and then sent a one liner. It's a shame.

why in the first place should there be so many universities. Not all impart quality education but are minting money. Education has come to be one of the most profitable businesses here. The four banned universities must have failed to please the 'teams' otherwise they too would have been continuing the unworthy business. Unless inexpensive education is brought at the doorstep of the common man, no progress is possible.

HEC is very weak organisation, there are no standards for university teachers, many professors in sindh and Baluchistan can not even read simple English and are drawing huge salaries, there should be annual exam of all professors and should have minimum English language standards testing through ielts every 2 years. Incompetent teachers should be replaced with competent teachers. Pakistan has gone 30 years backward in education.

I am watching this news since last year. But a private college in Faisalabad still offer degree from Global Institute, Lahore. God mercy on those students who still believe on that institute. Govt should take strict action against those institutes who are ruining the career of innocent students.

HEC will not public it, bcoz it is their mistake. They should manage the university from day 1st. Now only in Al Khair university we have around 100,000 students. Many of them are on senior position in public and private offices but HEC reject their degrees from 1994. Several are already attest their degrees 15 to 20 years before now at this point of time HEC is not accepting their degrees. I believe HEC should have comprehensive Audit with in HEC and how they attest the degree before and how they are rejecting now. Moreover, Chairman HEC should be clean person, how in 1995 he took two degrees in one year, this is another question on HEC creditability.

HEC announced the university of Turbat and Loralai at the same time in 2009 but today their comparison shows their difference , university of Loralai still shows the image of govt primary school having no administration staff , teachers, even the basic facilities of water and washrooms, etc , no laws and regulations of HEC followed so HEC should review the progress and take notice of the worst condition of university of Loralai.
