GUJRAT, Aug 15: A Nazim of the union council No 59 filed a petition in a local court against the highhandedness of 33 policemen, including two inspectors, with a request to register a case against them, Dawn learnt here on Friday.

The complainant is Nazim Najeeb Ashraf Cheema while respondents are Gujranwala CIA inspector Muhammad Riaz and constable Shamim Cheema, Civil Line SHO Mian Muhammad Tauseef and 30 unidentified policemen of the Elite Force.

The complainant alleged in his petition that he was asleep at his Eidgah Road residence when a police party conducted a raid there.

He alleged the police party, led by inspector Riaz and constable Shamim, had entered his house by scaling the boundary wall and started knocking at the door from inside. As he came out of his bedroom, the police arrested him and bundled him along with his two servants Nadeem and Zahid in their official vehicle. On the way, he further blamed that the policemen subjected his servants to severe torture.

He said constable Shamim had dismounted him at Chenab bridge, threatening to shoot him if he did not disclose the whereabouts of a proclaimed offender. Later they took them to Peoples Colony office in Gujranwala where policemen harassed him and his servants, he alleged.

ON THE RAMPAGE: Unidentified robbers looted two houses, women passengers of a tonga, snatched a motorcycle and took away two motorcycles in six different strikes in and around the city during the last 48 hours.

Six bandits in police uniform barged into the house of SDO Khalid in Ladha Sadha, Jalalpur Jattan, and held up the women inmates at gunpoint. Posing themselves as policemen of Sheikhpur Chowki, they told the women that they had come to search illegal weapons. However, they collected 52 tolas of gold and Rs42,000 in cash and escaped.

Four thieves sneaked into Akram’s house in Doga Colony, Kharian Cantonment, and decamped with cash, jewellery and valuables worth Rs272,000.

Three armed robbers intercepted Usman Farooq and his friend near Behram Warrah village and deprived them of their motorcycle, Rs24,205 in cash and 500 dollars.

Three bandits stopped a tonga near Dahar, Kharian, and snatched at pistol point cash and ornaments worth Rs40,000 from Munaza and two other women.

Unknown thieves took away a motorcycle (LXV-7837) of Safdar Nadeem from Banian village of Kakrali.

Similarly, thieves took away a motorcycle (GTE-8114) of councillor Arif, who parked it near Servis factory.
