ISLAMABAD, Aug 13: Inam Gul was knocked out of the Davis Cup trials being held at Lahore’s Services Club by Muhammad Shafeeq 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2) while Shahzad Khan despite losing to Jaleel Khan 6-3, 5-7, 4-6 qualified for the second round.

Out of nine players who had been invited by the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) for the trials, only seven reported with Shahzad Samad Khan and Asim Shafik both staying away. While Shahzad could not make it because of medical reasons, Asim is said to be in Malaysia.

The seven players fighting for selection on the team that is to play Korea next month, four including Jalil Khan, Shahzad Khan, Nomi Qamar and Mohammad Shafik qualified for the next round.

Two players out of these four would be selected who would join Aisamul Haq and Aqeel Khan, both of whom are exempt from appearing in the trials.

The selection committee of the PTF will announce team on Friday.

Group A: Jaleel Khan bt Wasif Cheema 6-2, 6-4, Jaleel Khan bt Shahzad Khan 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, Shahzad Khan bt Wasif Cheema 6-3, 6- 2; Jaleel and Shahzad Khan qualify for next round.

Group B: Nomi Qamar bt Akbar Pataudi 6-2, 6-1, Nomi Qamar bt Inam Gul 7-5, 6-3, Nomi Qamar bt Muhammad Shafeeq 7-6 (4), 6-2, Muhammad Shafeeq bt Inam Gul 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2), Muhammad Shafeeq bt Akbar Pataudi 6-4, 6-1, Inam Gul bt Akbar Pataudi 6-4, 6-4; Nomi Qamar and Muhammad Shafeeq qualify for next round.

Best of five round robin competition: Nomi Qamar bt Jaleel Khan, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4, Shahzad Khan bt Muhammad Shafeeq 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
