LAHORE, Aug 13: The Pakistan Medical Association, Punjab, has resented health minister’s statement that retired professors were being given extension as the department was facing dearth of experienced people.

A news release issued here on Wednesday said it was highly illogical move to give extensions to retired professors. The department needed to promote junior doctors and encourage them to replace their seniors.

It said the extensions given to retired professors caused restlessness among junior doctors.

It said the PMA was campaigning that the government should recruit qualified doctors on regular basis so that they could provide them base to fulfil government’s commitment to deliver health service to masses.

It said it had learnt that the health department was moving a case to give three-year extension to Prof Dr Rehana Mahmood Malik, who was due to retire on Aug 15. Prof Rehana was being granted extension as her brother was an army general, it added.

It said the PMA had called its emergency meeting on Aug 14 at the PMA House to chalk out strategy to fight against the move to grant extensions to retired professors.
