LAHORE, Jan 4: The provincial government, with the help of UNDP, plans to spend Rs70 million on providing health care and civic amenities in five districts of the Punjab.

This was told to the participants of the concluding session of a workshop organized under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Friday.

UNDP’s South Asia director Chaudhry Inayatullah said the UNDP would also spend Rs230 million on sewerage and water supply schemes in the country. Recommendations in this regard have been sought from the provincial governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), he said.

Kutcha Abadis director general stressed upon the participants to take solid steps for poverty alleviation. Collective efforts were required for taking the country out of poverty and civil society must contribute its share in this regard, he added.

International institutions have started playing an active role in the development projects, specially in the post September 11 scenario.

In these circumstances, it was imperative to identify the projects of maximum utility and implement them honestly, he said.
