KARACHI: Questions are being raised in Pakistan cricket circle on the logic behind awarding Rs10 million to chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq for Pakistan’s victorious Champions Trophy campaign.
The rest of the selectors including Tauseef Ahmed, Wasim Haider and Wajahatullah Wasti were given one million each at the Prime Minister’s reception held for the Champions Trophy winning squad in Islamabad on Tuesday.
“It makes no sense to give the chief selector such a huge amount while the head coach and other coaching staff have got Rs5 million each for the Champions Trophy win,” former chief selector Iqbal Qasim said.
“Then why this disparity between the money given to the chief selector and other selectors,” Iqbal, also an ex-Test spinner, questioned.
Another former chief selector and ex-Pakistan coach Mohsin Khan said he could not fathom how the head coach who was part and parcel of the campaign in England could be given five million and the chief selector who did not even travel to England double the amount.
“And when has chief selector ever been rewarded with cash prizes if the team has done well? The same money could have been used for better development purposes,” he said.
A source close to the development said, “Initially the list/notification by the PM’s office had said while the players would get 10 million each and the head coach and coaches five million each but later it was decided to reduce the amount for some members of the team staff including the media manager, social media manager, phsyio, masseur etc and the same amount was utilised for rewarding the selectors.”
He said the Board employees, who were with the team in England, were not happy with their prizes being reduced by more than half but kept quiet.
The criticism has also come because Inzamam gets a monthly salary of Rs1.2 million and the rest of the selectors around Rs300,000 from the PCB.

So this is the transparency of Najam Sethi's PCB. I respect both Inzamam and Najam Sethi (watch his Aapas ki baath regularly), but I am disgusted by this abuse of power.

It makes no sense at all. That is why there is such a fast widening reward, income and wealth and poverty gap between 'haves n haves not' in Pakistan. Also, it is because he is a blue-eyed baby of the ruling class. The others must not be of the same tribe. Recently, such a disparity and inequity was published in the news. In the NAB the top man gets PRs. 0.8 million pm and an ordinary clerk gets PRs. 25,000 pm. Inzamam has been needlessly elevated to this post of favorite. Salams

Its beyond doubts that team has exceptionally performed and required due recognition. Their should not be race of rewarding from Govt. It should be one ceremony and all the well wisher to be asked to contribute what they intent to contribute and make a pool from their the committee based on the performance recommend the reward and distributed. Now it appears there is a race among the institutions that they should reward the team. This practice should be stopped as it will always be controversial and let the team player be hero's. Hero's are not sale able they have their own identity and get recombination every aspect of their live. Let them be as a team instead of creating environment of individual supremacy which will be a destructive element to maximise their material benefits and their performance will be effected. In Pakistan their are already lot of issues let the sprit to hold nation above all remain in the players

I dont mind such rewards (which anyway come occasionally keeping our performance). However, its the monthly salary that many of these non-performers get and do nothing, this should be the concern. Take Ahmed Shahzad or Afridi in his time, being paid ridiculously high without any input from them. Also Wajahatullah Wasti in the selection committee? The greatest TUK TUK of all time. Still remember his turtle pace innings in 1999 WC. Unfortunately he performed in 1999 SF and in the final again returned to the form he carries in precious 8 matches. For me, Wasit and Azhar Ali will be the TUK TUK kings in the history of Cricket.

Inzi does not deserve this amount of Rs.1 Crore where as he have higher salary of monthly of Rs1.2 million and the rest of the selectors around Rs300,000 from the PCB. three times more. similarly Inzi received Rs 10 M and each selector 1M too much to In does not deserve ? debt to poor nation, Inzi should donate Rs.9 M to Mithi Tharparkar rest only Rs1 M he should keep.

All PCB employees selectors and players are already on salary.. They are doing a job and geeting paid for it.
If you wanna start this bonus reward incentives programs for winning trophies thats great BUT at the same let it be known to players and selectors that if you don't qualify up to a certain level during highly lucrative and international events, your salaries will be slashed!!!

When someone has looted billions from the nation, handing out Rs 1 or 10 million out of the tax-payer's kitty is a no-brainer for them. It is not NS's own money, therefore it is not hurting him. Nor does he pay much in taxes. So nothing to sweat over.

And this was the selector who sent an unfit Umar Akmal to England for Champions Trophy. Thank God Arthur spotted that and sent him back. Otherwise we would have another liability in the shape of Akmal apart from Shehzad and Wahab.

It is a good initiative by PM to bring back sports in the country, encourage youth to engage in sports rather than wasting time. But salaries of management staff including Inzi bhai are too high. They should not be paid that much.

Are the players and selectors/coaches fined for poor performance in the tournament by deductions in their salary?
If not then why are they being doled out extra-ordinary amounts on winning?
It would have been much better if a road/bridge/social project was named after each player in their home town and a token amount/medal presented to each instead of spending public money on them so lavishly.

A lot is being said about misuse of tax payers money. What tax payers money? The contribution from taxpayers is a pittance in Pakistan and I imagine it hardly pays for the security bills of hundreds of MP's, MNA's, ex-PM's, presidents etc. Only 10% of the working population pays tax, most of whom highly subsidized.

@Khurram Dear your job description for a chief selector is so uninformed. There is alot to do from visiting cricket divisional offices to maintaing good contacts and visits to grass root level (second diviosion and clubs). Chief selector heads a committee of selectors who have their own netweork which penetrate to the grass roots level. It needs time and brain and I would say the Salary he gets is justified.

These are highly paid professionals doing their job. Why are they being paid such exorbitant amounts from taxpayer's money. I pay taxes because it's the law. I did not consent at any stage for my money to become the PM's personal reward money stash that he doles out to anyone he pleases. If he is so inclined, maybe he should give rewards from his personal billions.

Every single new debut has performed in way or another, where were all these greats objecting now, when the team was in despair...
All these objecting now are part of a corrupt gang, which always tried to influence the selectors to get their loved ones selected, Inzamam does not bow to these culprits thus selecting honestly paid off.

Those who favor no reward given all professionals are paid salary to do their job; miss a critical "pay for performance" model where good performance must be rewarded, likewise poor performance should be punished.
I like to propose tiered salaries and rewards ( well established in advance) for best individual and team performance ( two have to be tied smartly otherwise one would sacrifice team success for individual one). Players should move within the tier based on quarterly performance. Also as a rule of thumb, base salaries should be a smaller portion of overall reward based system to encourage continuous good performance. All stake holders should be given fair proportion according to their role.

Let him enjoy his prize money please. It is up to the prize giver how much he or she wants to award somebody with? If the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, one of the richest persons in the world awards his Pk. Rs.10 million, approximately equal to US $ 100k, so be it.
After all, as chief selector of green-shirts team which won the coveted 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in England recently against arch rivals India, he also contributed his share of work and responsibility. If other members of the team were rewarded, why not him?
