CDG proposes new cattle market

Published August 8, 2003

LAHORE, Aug 7: The City District Government Livestock department has proposed utilization of 3,500 kanal barren forest department land near Karol Ghati for the development of a ‘bakkar mandi’ for northern Lahore.

The department considers that the establishment of a ‘bakkar mandi’ for northern Lahore has become a necessity in view of the decision to shift the Kot Kamboh Slaughterhouse and ‘bakkar mandi’ to Shahpur Kanjran.

Meatsellers of northern Lahore will find it extremely difficult to bring meat from a distance of 20 kilometres. Meat prices will also go up due to increase in transportation costs.

The department has proposed the setting up of the new ‘bakkar mandi’ at Karol Ghati not only because the barren land is not being put to any use but also because it is located on Bund Road and the trucks carrying the cattle can reach it very easily.

The proposed ‘bakkar mandi’ can easily meet the requirements of cattle for the Shahdara and Shalimar Town slaughterhouses.
