KARACHI: Deputy Mayor Arshad Vohra has said that efforts are being made to provide an enabling environment so that special (handicapped) people could play their due role in the economy and progress of the country.

Speaking at a function organised to distribute ration and other essential goods to the deserving as well as special people in Hijrat Colony on Thursday, he said that training be provided to special people to make them self-sufficient and enable them to play their role in economic uplift of the country.

He said that if a level playing field was provided and equal opportunities were made available to the special people, they would prove that they were second to none. He said that services of organisations involved in assisting special people be recognised to encourage them in their work.

He urged the people to identify non-operational dispensaries, meant for the treatment of the handicapped, in their areas so that those could be made operational for special people’s benefit.

Councillor Aslam Khan and other social activists of the area, including Ahmed Yaqoob, Mohammad Gulzar and Sharif Awan, also spoke, says a Karachi Metropolitan Corporation statement.
