MIRPURKHAS, Aug 6: Nazims of the district’s seven talukas have demanded that the government should declare Mirpurkhas as a calamity-affected area in the wake of the damage caused by rains.

This demand was made at a meeting of the District Advisory Committee held here on Wednesday.

District Nazim Pir Shafqat Hussain Shah Jilani presided over the meeting which was attended by the DCO and EDOs.

Speaking at the meeting, Mirpurkhas Taluka Nazim Syed Inayat Ali Shah said medicines should be provided to villagers and growers be trained by the agriculture extension department in saving their crops form pest attacks.

The district Nazim asked taluka Nazims to cooperate in completion of the survey of losses so that the report could be submitted to the Sindh government by Aug 15.

CONVICTED: The district and sessions judge, Iqbal Ahmad Arain, here on Wednesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs50,000 in the murder case of a Human Rights Commission of Pakistan activist.

The convict, Shelam Banglani, will have to undergo additional six months imprisonment if he failed to pay the fine amount.

The HRCP activist, Khan Mohammad Banglani, who was also a local leader of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz, was axed to death near the Sufi town, Umerkot taluka, on Nov 17, 2000.

Shelam Banglani was arrested by the Umerkot police and the co-accused Nabi Bux Banglani is still absconding.

Meanwhile, Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz chairman Bashir Khan Qureshi and party leaders Shafi Karnani, Abdul Wahid Areesar and Manzoor Memon welcomed the court decision.

In a joint press statement on Wednesday, they also demanded the arrest of the absconding accused.
