LAHORE, Aug 4: Owners of 1,500 smoke-emitting vehicles have been issued warning slips in Lahore during the first phase of the campaign to check degradation of environment.
Launched on July 21, the first phase of the campaign against smoke-emitting vehicles concluded on Monday.
Fines will be imposed on vehicles in the second phase from Tuesday (today), followed by impounding of vehicles and cancellation of motor vehicle fitness certificates in the third phase. The second and third phases will continue indefinitely.
Besides Lahore, the three-phase campaign was launched in Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan and Rawalpindi by the EPD in collaboration with the transport and traffic police departments.
Mobile squads comprising a traffic police inspector, an EPD inspector and a motor vehicle examiner have been constituted. Four squads were deployed in Saddar, Model Town, City and Cantonment divisions to examine vehicles. One squad each examined vehicles in Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala and Rawalpindi.
Mobile squads comprising the environment protection, transport and police departments inspectors checked 1,850 vehicles in Saddar, Cantonment, Model Town and City divisions of Lahore.
Warning slips were also issued to the owners who had installed pressure horns and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) kits in their vehicles.
Warning slips were also issued to around 70 smoke-emitting vehicles of the provincial and the city district governments.
EPD deputy director Nasimur Rahman said his department also rejected the appeal of a transport union regarding installation of LPG kits in vehicles, especially in wagons and rickshaws. He said the EPD was promoting CNG kits.
