QUETTA: A police officer who was martyred in a gun attack late on Monday night was laid to rest in a local graveyard on Tuesday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Omer-Ur-Rehman was seriously wounded along with his nephew Sub-Inspector Bilal-Ur-Rehman when assailants opened fire on them when they were going to a mosque to offer Maghrib prayers after breaking their fast in the Manojan Road area. The banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi Al-Alami claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attackers, who were on a motorcycle, managed to escape. The DSP, who was shot in the head, died late on Monday night while SI Rehman was admitted to a hospital.

Inspector General of Balochistan Police Ahsan Mehboob, Additional IG Dr Majeeb, Quetta police chief Abdul Razzaq Cheema and senior government officials attended the funeral prayers.

Meanwhile, Balochistan Home Minister Mir Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti said that elements involved in the killing of DSP Rehman would be brought to justice.
