KARACHI, Aug 3: There has been an uproar over the government’s failure to come up to the expectations of people in providing emergency assistance to hundreds of thousands of people affected by the recent widespread rains in Sindh and also led to floods in several districts of the province.
The Pakistan Peoples Party has strongly criticized the government for its indifferent attitude towards Sindh at a time when thunder storms, widespread torrential rains and floods had wreaked havoc and caused heavy casualties as well as colossal damage to properties.
The party’s Sindh chief, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, who is also Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly, lamented that instead of consoling the people devastated by the natural calamity, the governor had left for London and the chief minister and his colleagues did not find time to come out with some practical help. They, he regretted, were doing nothing for the people in trouble, except for issuing statements.
While the people of Sindh are going through the agony of widespread devastation, the federal government is busy in machination to complete anti-Sindh projects like Greater Thal Canal and Kalabagh Dam, he observed.
Addressing a meeting of the PPP, Karachi Division, which was presided over by Haji Muzaffar Ali Shujra, Mr Khuhro held out the assurance that the PPP would never leave the people of Sindh alone in hour of need, come what may.
The meeting adopted a resolution calling for a nationwide campaign for the reconstruction of devastated areas of Sindh.
The meeting also called for the resettlement of the affected residents of Sheedi Village, Manghopir, and Mubarak Village, Hawkesbay.
JAMAAT-I-ISLAMI: The Karachi chief of Jamaat-i-Islami, Dr Mairajul Huda Siddiqui and other party leaders visited different areas of the former Central and East districts where relief camps have been set up by Al-Khidmat in the affected areas, Kutchi Abadis and villages. Mr Siddiqui distributed relief goods among the affected people.
Speaking on this occasion, he said that the funds provided by the federal and provincial governments for the victims were quite insufficient. He urged both the governments to allocate more funds and ensure its distribution only to the deserving people. He called for a strict check on unscrupulous elements in the bureaucracy indulged in misappropriation.
JUI: The city chief of Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan, Hafiz Mohammad Taqi, who has recently visited the rain and flood affected Badin and Thatta districts, has stressed the need for the induction of more boats for relief and rescue operations. He said that trained people were badly needed for rescue work in the flooded areas where countless stranded families were waiting for relief goods and needed to be taken to safer places.
TAH: The Chairman of Tehreek Ahl-i-Hadith, Allama Abdullah Ghazi has said that the massive and widespread devastation proved totalfailure of the government departments’ planning. He urged the authorities to take effective emergency measures to prevent outbreak of epidemics in the affected areas.
ST: The Sunni Tehreek chief, Mohammad Abbas Qadri, while on a visit to the relief camps set up by the Ahl-i-Sunnat Khidmat Committee, said it was a national and religious duty of all citizens to help the poor and victims of the calamity. He appealed to philanthropists to come forward and contribute to the relief efforts.
