LAHORE: Police claimed on Wednesday to have arrested a suspect allegedly involved in killing of his mother, wife and injuring two other family members in Raiwind.

Police said Ishaq of Islamabad Colony, with a history of mental illness, had killed his mother Khatoon Bibi and wife Riffat, besides injuring his brother and sister-in-law two days ago.

The police registered a murder case against the suspect on the complaint of his father Deen Muhammad.

Muhammad told Dawn that his son was suffering from mental disorder and hospitalised for treatment.

He said that on Tuesday evening, Ishaq’s wife was going to visit doctor for their daughter’s medical checkup when he stopped her, saying there was no need for the girl’s checkup as she was fine.

He said when Ishaq’s wife tried to argue, the suspect got enraged and started beating her. Muhammad said Ishaq’s mother intervened and rescued Riffat.

He said the suspect then went outside and returned home after three to four hours with a knife and attacked his mother and wife, leaving them critically injured. Both of them died on the spot.

Muhammad said his elder son and his wife who tried to rescue both the women also suffered knife injuries.

Saddar Division (investigation) Superintendent of Police (SP) Maher Mumtaz said the suspect was mentally unstable and remained in the mental hospital for more than three years for treatment.

He said the police had arrested the suspect and recovered the knife used in the double murder from his possession.

The SP said initial investigation revealed that the suspect was annoyed with his family because they had chained him during his illness and were again planning to move him to mental hospital.

There is no ambiguity about whether very high inflation devastates society; but economists are not entirely sure how much influence high interest rates hold in controlling inflation.
