A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against unknown persons accused in connection with Friday's suicide attack targeting Deputy Chairman Senate Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri in Mastung, city police station revealed on Saturday morning.

The FIR was lodged by the Station House Officer (SHO) Safar Khan Zehri against unknown accused, police sources said. They added that the FIR was registered under charges of murder, attempt to murder and terrorism.

26 people were killed and over 40 were injured in a deadly suicide bombing at Mastung district of Balochistan. Deputy Chairman Senate Maulana Ghafoor Haideri was also injured in the suicide attack, which was later claimed by the Islamic State.

Haideri's convey was targeted on the Quetta-Karachi National Highway as he had just left a seminary after attending a graduation ceremony and offering Friday prayers.

"We are investigating the incident," Home Minister Balochistan Sarfaraz Bugti told DawnNews. He said the crime scene was protected and that forensic experts from Punjab were expected to arrive to help the authorities carry out the investigation.

Most of the victims of the attack belonged to Kalat and Mastung districts of Balochistan. Amid tight security, the dead were buried in Mastung, Quetta and Kalat.

Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) workers took to the streets in Quetta to mourn the killing of their party workers and mount pressure on the government to apprehend the accused involved in the attack. Panic prevailed in Mastung and other parts of central Balochistan in the aftermath of terrorist incident.

Charred body parts of the suicide bomber were also sent to the Combined Military Hospital for DNA testing.
