The Sindh government will bear the cost of repairing a 100-year-old bungalow that stands inside the Jufelhurst School in Karachi's Soldier Bazaar area, a spokesperson at the chief minister's office said on Wednesday.

The historic building was demolished last weekend, provoking an uproar from stakeholders and alumni of the school, as well as civil society.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has instructed Sindh Education Minister Jam Mehtab Dahar to consult with architect Marvi Mazhar and other stakeholders regarding the repairs needed for the demolished building, the spokesperson said.

"When this building was declared protected, who demolished this national heritage," the chief minister had inquired.

"Whoever committed this ‘conspiracy or mischief,’ he will not go unpunished," Shah promised.

Mazhar has in the past been involved with the preservation of the school's building.

During his meeting with the education minister, the chief minister said the costs of reparations will be borne by the provincial government, the spokesperson said.

Shah took notice of the demolition on Monday after Sindh Police chief A.D. Khawaja launched a “discreet inquiry” into the demolition of the school building's boundary, a few rooms of the bungalow, and the school principal’s residence within the premises.

Activists had expressed anger at the demolition of the building, which was declared a heritage site in 2016.
