KARACHI, July 26: First renal transplant was performed at the Liaquat National Hospital (LNH), in collaboration with the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), giving a new lease of life to Fakir Mohammad, a farmer from Mirpur Mathelo, Ghotki district.

SIUT sources said on Saturday that the transplant was done free of cost, undertaken on Tuesday by a team of doctors comprising Dr Iffat Yazdani, Dr Ishrat Saleem and Dr Aziz Abdullah from the LNH and Prof Adibul Hasan Rizvi from SIUT.

The LNH department of Nephrology and Transplantation was stated to have plans to continue renal transplantation on regular basis in collaboration with the SIUT.

Fakir Mohammad’s younger brother Allah Jivayo donated the kidney, who was also a poor farmer. The former was discharged from hospital on Friday, and was reported to be doing well while his donor was discharged a few days back, the source said.

Fakir Mohammad suffered from chronic renal failure and stared his haemodialysis at a centre in Daharki, free of cost, funded by a private company.—APP
