MULTAN, Jan 2: The Multan Municipal Corporation (MMC) is yet to issue work orders for reparation of three school buildings which had been declared dangerous, although, it had invited tenders three months ago.

It was learnt here on Wednesday that the MMC education officers forwarded a report in Feb 2001 to the municipal’s engineering department, declaring the buildings of the MMC girls primary school, Andhi Khoi, MMC girls primary school, Hassan Parvana, and MMC boys primary school, Double Phatak, dangerous.

The report said repair work should be immediately started as some portions of the buildings could collapse any time endangering lives of 700 students, adding the education branch would not be responsible for any mishap.

In Sept 2002, an army monitoring team visited these schools and recommended repair work. It declared the buildings and electricity fittings dangerous. The team directed the MMC to forward report for the completion of repair work by Oct 30.

In October, the MMC invited tender for the purpose but had not so far issued the work orders.

When contacted, MMC education officer Riaz Husain said he had time and again brought the situation into the notice of the authorities but without success. He was not authorized to order the work, he claimed.

Tehsil Municipal officer Akram Khan came out with the same reply, insisting nothing in the new set-up was clear as to who would be authorized to release the requisite funds.—Nouman
