KARACHI: The Mayor of Karachi, Waseem Akhtar, has said that efforts are under way to upgrade healthcare facilities at Karachi Metropolitan Corporation-run hospitals and medical units across the city, as bringing improvement in the local area dispensaries can reduce pressure on major hospitals.

The mayor expressed these views on Friday during his visit to the Indus Hospital in Korangi where he met the hospital’s chief executive officer, staff as well as patients and attendants.

Accompanied by Deputy Mayor Dr Arshad Vohra, chairman of Korangi district municipal council Syed Nayyar Raza and senior officials, Mr Akhtar went to different sections of the hospital and inquired about the medical facilities being provided to patients.

The mayor asked for suggestions to bring improvement in diagnosis and medical treatment facilities at the 13 big hospitals of the KMC. Health is a primary need of people, he said, asking the hospital what cooperation the medical facility could provide the KMC in this connection.

Earlier, CEO of the hospital Dr Abdul Bari gave a detailed briefing on the network of Indus Hospitals. He said eight branches of the hospital, including the one in Korangi, were operating across the country.

He told the mayor that free medical treatment facilities were provided to patients at all the eight hospitals.

Earlier, Dr Arshad Vohra inaugurated a free medical camp for KMC employees at KMC building.

He visited the stalls set up by Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Fatima Jinnah Dental College, Dr Essa Laboratory, Sailani Welfare and other organisations.
