KARACHI: Shaista under treatment

Published December 24, 2003

KARACHI, Dec 23: Shaista Almani, the girl who had married on her own and had been chased by her tribe, is recovering in a local hospital, it is learnt.

The Sindh High Court, Sukkur bench, had ordered that she be sent to Karachi for treatment under the guidance of leading psychiatrist Haroon Ahmad.

Shaista, accompanied by her father, younger sister and a maternal uncle, had arrived here a few days back and was admitted to a hospital near Teen Talwar, where police are posted for her security.

Responding to Dawn’s questions on Tuesday, Dr Haroon Ahmad said Shaista, who had passed through such circumstances that were beyond human endurance, had undergone post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and at present was recovering slowly.

He said that a few tests had been carried out and a few more are still to be done. In a few days, when the results of the tests would come, the team of doctors treating her would discuss her case and suggest the kind of psychotherapy and treatment for her.

It may be recalled that Shaista had married of her free will and her tribe did not like it. The couple left the village and had been on the run for many weeks.

They were eventually tracked down and brought back to the village. The man announced that he had divorced her.

The police produced her in the court in Sukkur and the court ordered that she be sent to Jamshoro to live with her sister. The sister did not allow her to live with her. So she was brought before the High Court in Sukkur, which ordered that she be taken to Karachi for treatment.
