HYDERABAD, Dec 21: Former Supreme Court judge Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid has said no individual has the authority to bring about amendments to the Constitution and there is no room for a uniformed president in the supreme law.
He was talking to journalists at the workshop on dams organized by the IUCN here on Saturday.
Mr Zahid was of the opinion that the LFO was in direct conflict with the judgment of the Supreme Court in the Zafar Ali Shah’s case.
He said the Supreme Court had allowed constitutional amendments subject to four conditions which laid down that the parliamentary system should not be altered.
He said under the Constitution, no government servant could hold any other government post within two years of his retirement.
Mr Zahid said the judges who had taken oath under the PCO were not wrong. He said six judges including himself did not take oath under the PCO and five among them belonged to Sindh.
TASK FORCE: The district government in collaboration with NGOs has set up a task force on HIV/AIDS to control the disease.
The task force was set up at a joint meeting of officers of health, education and community development departments and representatives of different NGOs at the district Nazim secretariat here the other day.
District Nazim Dr Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman will head the task force which will work in coordination with an 11-member steering committee, comprising government officers of related departments and representatives of NGOs concerned.
Speaking on the occasion, the district Nazim, who presided over the meeting, said the task force would not only educate the people about the disease but also provide care and cure facilities.
He said Hyderabad was the first district in the province where such a body had been constituted.
He said it was also being planned to launch the Drug Control Programme in the district next month to rehabilitate drug addicts.
The Nazim asked health department officers and NGOs to prepare a result-oriented strategy for prevention and eradication of HIV/AIDS.
He also assigned the task force to prepare a feasibility report to provide better treatment facilities and social and moral support to HIV-infected persons.
