Jamaat chief put under house arrest

KOHAT, Jan 1: Jamaat-i-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed was again put under house arrest at the Tanda Dam Rest House late on Sunday night, informed sources told Dawn on Monday.

Mr Ahmed was shifted to his home from Kohat during Ramazan to spend Eid-ul-Fitr with his family and recover from chest pain. He underwent a heart surgery last year and was not in good health when the government decided to detain him under the maintenance of public order.

Dozens of Frontier Constabulary personnel have been deployed around the rest house.

According to the sources, the assistant superintendent of the jail and other staff, whose services were rendered useless after the prison was taken over by the military to guard 139 Al-Qaeda members, have permanently been deputed at the rest house.
