The 9th International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) opened at the Karachi Expo Centre on Tuesday.

IDEAS is a biennially held defence exhibition which brings together the defence industry's players across the globe to showcase latest technological innovations.

The defence industries of Turkey, China, Russia, North America, South America, Europe and Asia will have a significant presence at the exhibition.

An opening speaker at the event said there are 418 firms from 34 countries participating, out of which 157 are Pakistani firms.

"This time 9 more countries are visiting and participating in IDEAS. These include Luxembourg, Denmark, Belarus, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Belgium, Romania and Nigeria."

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif jointly inaugurated the exhibition, which is set to run from Nov 22-25, alongside Chief of Army Staff Gen Raheel Sharif, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Mohammad Zakaullah and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif while addressing an open ceremony reiterated Pakistan's commitment to discouraging an arms race in the region. "We, in fact, pursue the motive of 'Arms for peace', which is the tagline of IDEAS," he said.

A statement posted on the IDEAS website explains why it is held in Pakistan: "Pakistan's ever growing defence industry is in quest for seeking international alliances to meet the requirements of its armed forces and growing needs of the regional defence forces. Pakistan's own defence products present a perfect mix of indigenous and foreign technologies thus offering an ideal platform for defence collaboration."

Besides showcasing of products, there will be several high-level meetings among foreign delegates, key government officials and participants on the sidelines of the four-day IDEAS for forging alliances in defence production. An important international defence seminar will be held at a hotel on Nov 22. Sidelines conferences have been planned at the exhibition venue on Nov 23 and 24.

About 90 delegations from 43 countries are expected to attend the exhibition and seminar, including 30 high-level teams comprising defence ministers, defence secretaries and services chiefs.

Although Chinese and Turkish defence industries will have a significant presence, Russia is participating in the event this time in a big way.

Some of the major indigenously developed products to be showcased at the event include battle tank Al-Khalid, JF-17 Thunder, Super Mushshak and K-8 aircraft, Fast Attack Craft Missile boats, UAVs, armoured personnel carriers and premium grade military hardware.

By-polls for the NA-258 constituency scheduled to be held today were delayed due to the exhibition.

Traffic diversion

The office of deputy inspector general police (traffic) had issued detailed instructions for the regulation of traffic during the exhibition.

In spite of these arrangements, eyewitness reports on social media claim that University Road was shut to traffic under the Nipa bridge.

Traffic jams have been reported on Shahrah-i-Faisal and the Liaquatabad Flyover to Jamshed Road.

The Lyari Expressway is open to traffic.

Say what you want, but Armed forces are the most professional and competent institution in Pakistan. They know how to get things done. Well done.

Education is a most danger weapon in modern world i think it,s era of science and technology which have it,s great impact and importance in human life.As an Electrical engineer i really worry to see that Energy crisis is one of the major problem of pakistan which can never under estimate but i would like to say that When Abid sheer ali will deal this serious issue how we can solve this issue comprehensively ??? For this major concern we should give opportunity to PHD in electrical power engineers who know what is the technical deficiency to sort out this complexity .he does not know line losses but still on to hold this problem. Ideas is a good exhibition to show talent at international level and groom a new competent team who will be the part of pakistan,s defence in future.Good luck pakistan!

General raheel is agony for those who are against Pakistan. General raheel is a nightmare for the enemies . His terror eliminating skills were recognized globally and guard of honor was given in each country he was invited . Our Army is way too professional and ppl are amazed to have such a professional army ,how corrupt civil government is damaging Pakistan's image .

@rao abid I admire your enthusiasm. Unfortunately, a country this plagued by political nepotism and favoritism, our engineers have nowhere to go but treated as the lowest of the lot. In the meantime, build weapons and ammo because when you run out of food you can always eat bullets.

418 firms from 34 countries...Pakistan is truly getting isolated by the day.

Merchant Nov 22, 2016 12:10pm

IDEAS is a very good idea for the country. However, traffic diversion and massive public inconvenience only shows successive government's incompetency in maintaining law order.

KAshif Nov 22, 2016 12:13pm

Damn!! That's too much isolation!.

wAJIH UDDIN qIDWAI Nov 22, 2016 12:30pm

Good to see the developments of defense technologies and I wish there would be any educational exhibition, inaugurated by any Prime Minister.

Talha Nov 22, 2016 01:37pm

SAM Nov 22, 2016 02:19pm

Whats arms for peace? An exhibition for public transport would have been much more welcoming. Instead they have blocked traffic. Please think, all love and no thinking

Expo Center should be shifted to some place outside the city. Whenever any high profile event is held here, the whole traffic system goes haywire. It is callous of the government not to think of the inconvenience that it causes to the citizens by holding such events right in the heart of the city.

By shifting the Expo Center, two very important issues will be taken care of : security and traffic.

Citizen of karachi Nov 22, 2016 04:58pm

How about we have this exhibition in some other city the next time? Not only did the organizers closed the road in front of national stadium and diverted all the traffic to shahra-e-faisal but they are also closing shahra-e-faisal for VIP movement. If there VIPs don't feel safe then maybe not come to Karachi and let the common citizens carry on their daily activities without anymore hassles. Just for showing these VIPs how good the government is managing this city, they fixed the street lights, sidewalks, cut all the trees growing out of the karsaz flyover and installed road reflectors but what about all the other areas?

Syed Majid Hasan Nov 22, 2016 04:59pm

when it open for public

Iftikhar Husain Nov 22, 2016 05:07pm

The only institution that is performing very well in Pakistan is our army I wish all other section of the government work the saME WAY.

@Citizen of karachi

Yes, when over the years so many important head offices have been shifted from Karachi to Lahore, Rawalpindi or Islamabad, why not hold IDEAS in some other city. Karachiites have been enduring IDEAS ever since its inception. Time to give Karachi a break and to give other cities a chance to have a look at the IDEAS.

Arms kill, destroy, maim, disfigure, cause immeasurable devastation. This is what all arms have in common, this is what the world spends trillions on, this is what this exhibition and other exhibitions with similar "exhibits" have in common. Why cannot we as humans use our minds, our brains for the betterment of humankind, instead of making arms.

mojazze Nov 22, 2016 06:28pm

Proof that India has not been able to isolate Pakistan.

Make Pakistan great Nov 22, 2016 06:32pm

The world is not an ideal place. Till it remains in its current state, arms would be necessary to counter all forms of evil. Arms would remain a necessary 'unnecessary' requirement in this world till all its inhabitants have shunned violence and cruelty of all sorts.

Pak-Kiwi Nov 22, 2016 06:36pm

We MUST re-invent our future generation through Science and Technology that urgently requires focus on education, research and developments without those key points, we can't progress and stop brain drain from Pakistan. Please get rid of corrupt politicians and maintain highest level of justice, so no one can escape.

Jamal Nov 22, 2016 06:46pm

Thousands of commuters have suffered badly on Day 1 of Ideas 2016 due to miserable traffic management. It was said that University Rd will be open all time but both tracks were closed without notice mid-day which caused panic and severe jam in surrounding areas. It was also noticed that the traffic police was just playing a bystander role, standing at the blockades and not guiding or managing traffic properly. Vehicles going wrong way were not corrected at all.

we have to bear this mess for 3 days more. Lord have mercy on us.

Gem Khan Nov 22, 2016 07:12pm

We've not been isolated yet. Someone tell our neighbor's pm.

Batool Nasir Nov 22, 2016 08:44pm

Is this exhibition open to general public. If yes then okay, if not then why hold it at Hasan Square?

Ahsan Nov 22, 2016 08:54pm

IDEAS is a superb opportunity and window for Pakistani Manufacturers to gain access to international market. SEEING IS BELIEVING. Besides quality, costwise too , we should have edge over many exporters. I wish all success to participants in this expo.
