THATTA: Protesters block road

Published December 10, 2003

THATTA, Dec 9: Traffic on the Ghulamullah-Mirpur Sakro road remained suspended for about four hours on Monday as villagers blocked it in protest against the alleged detention of a farmer by coast guard personnel.

Eyewitnesses said coast guard personnel of the Ghulamullah- Sakro road outpost intercepted a truck loaded with manure and off-loaded farmer, Amin Chandio.

They also misbehaved with him on his refusal to pay extortion, they added.

The coast guard personnel also beat him up and detained for two hours. Villagers on receiving the news stormed the outpost and staged a sit-in in front of it, resulting in suspension of traffic for four hours.

Villagers dispersed after talks with DPO Nadir Khoso and TPO Sakro, Usman Malik.
