Judges age ‘part’ of govt package

Published December 8, 2003

LAHORE, Dec 7: The government has agreed to revert to the original retirement age of judges as part of an agreement with the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, which is likely to be concluded next week, believe some senior lawyers.

Requesting anonymity, they told Dawn on Sunday that the lowering of judges’ retirement age in accordance with the constitution would be the part of the official package, to be presented to the religious alliance.

The enhancement of age by three years under the LFO is one of the issues the Lawyers Joint Action Committee is agitating against.

In case the retirement age is reverted to what is provided by the constitution, nine members of the superior judiciary, including Chief Justice Sheikh Riaz Ahmad, may be retired forthwith. Justice Qazi Muhammad Farooq, Justice Munir A Sheikh and Justice Karamat Nazir Bhandari of the Supreme Court will follow the suit.

Justice Raja Muhammad Sabir of the Lahore High Court, Justice Abdur Rauf of the Peshawar High Court and Justice Muhammad Ashraf Leghari and Justice Qurban Alvi of the Sindh High Court are also among those who have been serving after the superannuation age.
