Zaheer also in fray for PCB top slot?

Published December 7, 2003

KARACHI, Dec 6: While suspense fills the air currently as to who will take over the reins of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) once Lt Gen Tauqir Zia finally relinquishes his power on Dec 14, several people are being mentioned for the most sought after and prestigious assignment in sports administration in the country.

According to well-informed sources, the latest candidate to emerge is Zaheer Abbas. The former Pakistan skipper, a staunch critic of PCB’s policies, had served as general manager sports in PIA not long ago.

Zaheer was mentioned by Gen Tauqir during the press conference in Lahore on Monday in which he announced his resignation. The outgoing PCB chairman specifically mentioned Zaheer’s weekly column in Dawn.

Some experts are of the opinion that a person with vast knowledge of sports administration would a have better understanding of the PCB affairs.

Apart from Zaheer, several other names are floating in Islamabad’s corridors of power. They include a few bureaucrats and military officials.
