ISLAMABAD: The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has offered to send fact-finding missions to both India-held Kashmir (IHK) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), the Foreign Office (FO) spokesman said Thursday.
FO Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said Pakistan was open to the idea of UN high commissioner visiting AJK.
“AJK is an area open to everyone and is frequented by foreign tourists and members of the diplomatic community in Pakistan, including representatives of the United Nations,” Zakaria said.
“The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has been denied access by India to Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, whereas Pakistan has never prevented UN officials from travelling to Azad Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.
On July 15, Pakistan requested the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to send a fact-finding mission to IHK to report on the gross violations of human rights.
Tensions between Pakistan and India have been running high since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani sparked anti-government protests in IHK, with over 60 people dead in clashes between protesters and Indian authorities.
Indian government troops in IHK have reportedly fired live ammunition, and used pellet guns and tear gas to control anti-government protesters.
The FO spokesperson said “Pakistan cannot accept equating the rampant human rights violations in India-held Kashmir with the situation in AJK.”
He added that the contrast between grim reality in IHK and AJK could not be starker. “It is, therefore, essential that the UN fact finding team must visit IHK.”

United Nations as world body has responsibility to solve the Kashmir problem. They are very quick to Ok for Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan etc. Whats stopping UNO to step in to Kashmir problem and stop the killing of kasmiri muslims? If UNO cannot do it, it would be considered irrelevant to Kashmiri problems. After seventy years, its not to lollypop to calm down the problem, it requires UNO's dedication to resolve the problem.

India is in a tight spot right now as the world is watching the violence and chaos erupting in Kashmir. This time it is different Kashmiris in IHK is fighting back and India's massive armed contingent suddenly finding it difficult to control. Things are starting to unravel as Kashmiri youth in IHK is ready make the ultimate sacrifice to end the occupation once and for all.
Indian govt is feeling the heat and is desperate to divert the attention. The Indian leadership is lashing out swinging both its arms left and right in a hope to latch onto something, so it can scare the saner voices emanating from within questioning India's Kashmir policy. The saner elements want to know why India want to hold on to something that does not want to be with it. They want to bring down the barriers between the two countries and end violence at all costs so the peace can be restored for future generations to come.
I hope that the saner voices prevail.

The UN resolution calls on both India and Pakistan that a plebiscite be held under UN auspices to ascertain the wishes of the people of Kashmir to decide their future.
India and Pakistan both have accepted the above UN resolution; while the people of Kashmir and Pakistan wants its implementation, India is shying away from holding plebiscite, in breach of the commitment it made in front of the whole world.

If such scale of violence and state brutality has taken place in some European country, it would have acted immediately, but it has shut up and closed its eyes on the grim situation in Indian Occupied Kashmir, where thousands of Kashmiris have been killed so far. @Timeto stopthis your logic is twisted. If CHina claims all of india and tells everyone else to stay out, according to your logic that is acceptable. No country can unilaterally make decisions specially when it is a UN issue. Kashmiris will decide their own fate, no outsider from other countries.

fact finding mission to determine what? This has been going on for 70 years UN still need to find facts. There have been at least 2 resolution passed in UN to let occupied Kashmiris determine their destiny. UN has done nothing to enforce these resolutions. UN just wants to say something to please Pakistan or whoever else. Their hands are tied.
UN is useless. They only act when pushed by big power.

According to me, all the previous governments and present government is smart enough to handle pakistan, during 1950 to 1980's kashmir was the only agenda between both the countries. After that, terrorism, Indus water treaty and other issues are agenda's are discussed and kashmir is somewhat sidelined. GOvt of India only wants to talk on terrorism and not kashmir. Which is a very good stance. And Pakistan are on their knnes to talk to India on kashmir but India is not ready

To be honest, Modi is beginning to really hurt none else but India. He and his coalition parties have done exactly what Pakistan was desperately hoping of. All controversial issues are now alive, diplomacy is a disaster and major problems faced by poor Indians are touching dangerous levels. Chest-thumping is not statesman ship. One failure after another making situation out of control.

UN bears the main responsibility for the turmoil in Kashmir. It has neglected to hold a plebiscite in Kashmir as demanded under UN Resolutions. It seems that UN is following India's dictat to deny the people of Kashmir their inalienable right to decide their own future statehood.

Fact finding mission must visit various parts of INDIA along with J&K which is integral part of INDIA. For us indians, J&K is just another state like Tamilnadu Telangana Haryana etc

Why Pakistan calls it Azad Kashmir if it maintains military and lets mainstream political parties take part in elections? At least India has officially declared Jammu and Kashmir a state of India. If you want implementation of UN resolutions then demilitirze your Azad Kashmir first as given in the resolution.

UN offers ? UN is a global body consisting of several countries, all the member countries support it with money and services, it is their job to get involved, last I checked, they don't need to offer, they need to just jump right in to find facts.

@Zak Zak can you quote what UN resolution says.It says first of all Pakistan has to vacate Territory of Kashmir and also remove people of Pakistan who have migrated to Kashmir.Please fulfil your part of resolution,only then India can be forced to fulfil its part of the resolution.
