RAWALPINDI, Dec 2: The accountability court of Rawalpindi on Tuesday granted four-day transit remand of a serving joint secretary of the interior ministry, Zia-ul-Islam, who was arrested on Monday by the NAB for alleged corruption.

The accused, who will be produced before the accountability court of Karachi on Dec 6, is likely to be shifted to Karachi within next 24 hours. Zia-ul-Islam was arrested from his office.

According to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Mr Zia had been living beyond his means and had accumulated huge assets illegally.

The NAB has also traced some 18 bank accounts of the accused and his family members in Pakistan. All the Rs45 million assets belonged to him and his family members, source said.

The accused was brought in the accountability court of Judge Muhammad Aslam Khan on Tuesday by FIA Assistant Director Abdul Hayee.

Zia-ul-Islam, who was from the district management group (DMG), had been posted in Sindh from 1972 to 2002.

He was recently posted as joint secretary on the recommendation of Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat.
