KARACHI, Dec 1: A low-intensity explosion rocked the Madina Shopping Mall on Sarwar Shaheed Road in Saddar on Monday night, however, no casualty was reported in the blast.

The explosion occurred at shop no. 85 located on the mezzanine floor of the building damaging the neighbouring shops and false ceiling of the floor. Police said that the device was placed in a garment bag dumped in the shop. Shops located on the mezzanine floor are mostly used as godowns for dumping garments, police said.

Confirming the explosion as an act of terrorism, CCPO Asad Ashraf Malick told newsmen that it seemed that the act was carried out with an intention that no casualty could take place.

Responding to a query whether there is any connection between this blast and Kawish Crown Plaza blasts, he said that investigations were being carried out and any conclusion at this stage would be premature.

DIG Operations Tariq Jamil told newsmen that over 200 grams explosive was used in the blast. He pointed out that it could not be immediately known that who owned the shop.

A senior police investigator on the condition of anonymity told Dawn that there was some degree of resemblance between the Kawish Plaza blasts which also caused damage to fixtures.
