SARGODHA, Nov 30: The government is determined to revamp the existing canal system by taking some adequate measures to give a boost to the agriculture sector in the country.

This was stated by provincial Irrigation Minister Chaudhry Aamer Sultan Cheema while talking to newsmen here on Sunday.

The minister said that new dams would be built to increase the water capacity in canals to ensure adequate water supply at tail-end. Emphasis would also be given on remodelling of canals and curtailing water theft incidents.

He further said that Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had also directed the Irrigation department to look up the canal system to facilitate growers.

For this purpose, he said that Irrigation department officers had been directed to hold fortnightly open kutcheris to resolve farmers’ grievances at their door steps.

In addition, he said various committees had been constituted which would work in collaboration with Irrigation officers for the betterment of the farming community.
