Girls clinch top positions in Peshawar board HSSC exams

PESHAWAR: Girl students, all from pre-medical group, have secured the top three positions in the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) examinations of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Peshawar.

According to the results announced here on Saturday, Paghunda Mayar, a student of Jinnah College for Women (JCW), University of Peshawar, clinched the first position by getting 1,008 marks out of total 1,100.

The second position was shared by Syeda Batool Haider and Amina Khan of the same college by obtaining 1,007 marks, while the third position was shared by Zainab Nawaz and Safina Tanveer, students of JCW and Islamia College respectively as they got 1,003 marks.

The pre-engineering group was topped by Assad Sultan of Islamia College, Peshawar, (ICP) with 1,000 marks. Another student of ICP, Mohammad Shadman Khan, got the second position by securing 985 marks, while the third position was shared by Ms Shafaq Tauqir of JCW and Habibullah of ICP as both obtained 984 marks.

The humanities group was topped by Ms Shakeeba Altaf with 888 marks. Zeemad Ahmad, a private candidate and Ms Uzma, a student of Government Girls Higher Secondary School Nishtarabad, Peshawar, got the second and third positions, respectively.

Of total 17,941 students of the pre-medical group 15,349 passed the examinations with the overall pass percentage of 86 per cent. Similarly, 7,608 of 9,385 students of the pre-engineering group passed the examinations.

Of 17,533 students of the humanities group 12,514 passed the examinations.

The announcement of the position holders was made in a ceremony held on the board premises.

The board chairman Dr Mohammad Shafi Afridi, controller Hamidullah Jan Marwat and its secretary Bakhtiar Khattak attended the ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Afridi said that efforts were made during the HSSC examinations to reduce the chances of cheating. He said that the existing examination system would be gradually changed to introduce multiple choice question papers.
