MANCHESTER: England batsman Joe Root's second-innings score of 71 not out on Monday gave him an aggregate tally for the ongoing second Test against Pakistan of 325 runs, after he made a career-best 254 in the first innings.

It was the fifth-highest aggregate by any England batsman in a Test.

England great Graham Gooch's aggregate of 456 against India at Lord's in 1990 remains the world record for most runs scored by a batsman in a Test.

Below is how Root's tally fits into the top five of most runs scored by an England batsman in a Test (total runs, player, first innings score, second innings score, opposition, venue, year):

  • 456 Graham Gooch (333, 123) v India – Lord's 1990
  • 375 Andrew Sandham (325, 75) v West Indies – Kingston 1933
  • 364 Leonard Hutton v Australia – The Oval 1938
  • 336 Walter Hammond v New Zealand – Auckland 1933
  • 325 Joe Root (254, 71) v Pakistan – Old Trafford 2016
