KARACHI, Nov 28: The dark bay colt Visitor, splendidly ridden by jockey Salim Ahmed, caused quite a stir lifting the Eid Millan Cup at the Winter Gymkhana Meeting held on Thursday.
Owned by Islamuddin and trained by Moheyuddin, the dark bay colt was an outsider against the likes of High Standard, Edging Ahead, Captain Crash, Khas ul Khas and Strike The Gold and was slowly away when the six furlong journey began. The speedy Edging Ahead with Tariq Mehmood in the saddle shot into the lead followed by High Standard, Khas ul Khas and Captain Crash.
Approaching the bend Edging Ahead still maintained the lead and was the first to turn for home closely followed by Captain Crash and Khas Ul Khas as High Standard seemed to fade away. One and half furlongs from the winning post Khas Ul Khas took over the lead from Edging Ahead. A furlong from home Khas Ul Khas, Edging Ahead and Captain Crash were racing neck and neck with Visitor joining the fray.
As the huge gathering roared on their approval, the four runners sped past the winning post, but it was Visitor who won the race from Captain Crash, pushing Khas Ul Khas into the third slot with Edging Ahead completing the frame.
For young trainer Moyeyuddin and Salim, it was indeed a day to remember. Moheyuddin finished off the afternoon with a fine hat-trick, saddling Sajjad H. Qureshi’s three-year-old dark bay colt Pasban in the fifth race, beating stable companion Neelam Taab by 2 1/4 lengths and the bay five-year-old Ranjha, ridden by jockey Arshad in the last event.
Salim completed his double through Pasban in a pillar to post victory in the fifth event and came out victorious once again in the next event.
In this race Power Plus installed as the favourite to win this race finished a bad fourth.
The new management suspended the license of jockey Tahseen Hussain and trainer Ashraf Majeed until further investigation. A bold move indeed. But one is deemed to ask why was the same punishment not meted out to jockey Latif, who rode the dark bay colt Fantastic Fighter and the trainer Anwar Ali. These two committed a more serious crime only last week.
Power Plus after finishing a good second the previous week at least finished on the board on Sunday, whereas Fantastic Fighter after winning a race, finished second in his next, only to finish in the far distance among the also ran a week later. Yet no action was taken or questions were asked of the rider and trainer. After all gentlemen, what is good for the goose is also good for the gander.
However in a day of upsets galore, horseracing was on much better standard than in the recent past. The favourites were genuinely beaten.
In fact the only favourite to oblige was Edward Chou’s dark bay colt Trust You, completing a hat-trick under jockey Shahid Mannan, after winning the fourth race of the afternoon on tight reins from Sarazen and Nawab, with Ring Master completing the frame.
After the race Dilshad astride Ring Master lodged an objection against Mumtaz Ali, the rider of Sarazen for bumping and boring in the straight, The objection was overruled.
The first race on the afternoon’s programme was won by Silver City ridden by riding boy Naveed, after the firm favourite Ever Shine ran out of steam a furlong from home and finished fourth behind Law Of Nature and stable mate Sajan Black.
Your Opinion presented Mumtaz with a fine victory in the next event, holding off the late challenge of Bull Dancer and front runner Mera Jugnoo.
The next event, a terms race for two-year-old Pakistan colts and fillies, maidens at the time of starting was won by the bay colt Al Asif with Zahoor Ahmed in the saddle, surprising Oriental Express and the favourite Fantastic Love, sprinting over five furlongs.
The next racing programme is scheduled for Wednesday.
