PESHAWAR, Nov 25: The people of the provincial capital and its adjoining areas celebrated Eid with great enthusiasm on Tuesday and the recreation places wore a festive look.

Amidst traditional confusion regarding the festival of Eid, which has become a hallmark of different cities in the NWFP, people dressed in newly-tailored and colourful clothes, visited mosques for offering the Eid prayers here.

After the prayers, they visited the residences of close relatives and friends throughout the day, embracing each other and exchanging pleasantries.

The Peshawarites and people belonging to adjacent villages thronged the parks since morning. During the entire day, the festivities continued in prominent parks. A large number of people of all ages — children, elders and youth were enjoying themselves at the Army Stadium, Bagh-i-Naran, Tatara, Khyber, Khalid bin Waleed, Shahi Bagh and other parks. Play lands there were the special attraction.

Almost all parts of the city echoed with the crackling of firecrackers. The China-made firecrackers, which are in great demand, are easily available in the markets.

Although the cinema business here has been facing a slump, but unlike other days the cinema houses remained packed with viewers, mostly from nearby rural areas. The cinema owners have been projecting newly-released Urdu, Punjabi and Pashto films for attracting more visitors.

Rush of people was seen at the confectioneries and sweetmeat shops. Similarly, small-time restaurants were also doing roaring business on Tuesday. On the main University Road, all shops remained closed except for bakeries and sweetmeat shops.

Majority of the public transport remained off the roads during most part of the day. Very few public mini-buses were seen plying on the roads with people sitting even on the rooftops.

In busy markets, all the shops wore colourful looks as these are neatly decorated and illuminated for attracting customers.
