Karachi sees first monsoon rainfall

KARACHI: The metropolis received moderate rainfall on Tuesday evening with reports of lightning and light thunderstorm in some parts of the city.
As a result of the downpour, 180 electric feeders tripped in the metropolis, of which 30 have been restored, said a tweet by K-Electric.
An official of the Met Office said the department's observatory at Old Airport area had recorded 31 millimetres of rain till 8.20 pm.
He stated that earlier in the evening Karachi's Nazimabad area had received 4.2 millimetres of rain.
Residents could be seen enjoying the rain as the downpour turned the city’s weather pleasant. Rain was reported from areas in district East, Central and South.
KMC Administrator Laeeq Ahmed directed all departments — particularly municipal services, engineering, parks and health — to be ready with necessary preparations and stand by available machinery to cope up with any emergency situation during monsoon.
The city is likely to receive occasional rain for one to two days, the met official said.
"The forecast for Karachi during the next 24 hours is partly cloudy to cloudy with chances of rain and thunderstorm."
Karachiites took to Twitter to express their delight at the first rain of the season in the city.
Majority of areas in district South did not receive rainfall, with old city areas falling in the district only reporting a light drizzle.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department had earlier in the day predicted chance of light rainfall in Karachi. The metropolis has witnessed hot and humid weather since last week, and the rainfall brought some relief to the people.
Rainfall in Thar
Various parts of Thar on Tuesday also received moderate to heavy rainfall.
Areas of Mith, Chelhar and Kaloi witnessed thunderstorms, while the towns in the region also reported receiving heavy rain fall.
“The people who had migrated to barrage areas have started coming back to their homes,” said Nisar Ahmed, Additional Deputy Commissioner Thar.
Electricity supply across the region was badly affected following the rainfall.
