LAHORE, Nov 24: The Lahore High Court on Monday disposed of a petition challenging permission to set up Eid mela at the parking lot of Allama Iqbal Town’s Moon Market.

Justice Raja Muhammad Sabir disposed of the petition when Lahore District Nazim’s counsel gave an undertaking that during the mela, the facility of parking to the shopkeepers and movement of customers in the shops would not be disturbed.

Qaumi Tajir Ittehad senior vice-president Tauseeful Haq had submitted in his writ petition that the Nazim had permitted setting up of Eid Mela at the parking lot of Moon Market by misusing his authority.

REPORT SOUGHT: The Lahore High Court on Monday directed an area magistrate of Gujranwala to constitute a medical board for the examination of a nine-year-old rape victim and submit a report within 10 days.

Justice Raja Muhammad Sabir also directed the Gujranwala DPO to depute an honest officer for the investigation of the incident after transferring the case from Ferozwala police station.

The victim’s mother had submitted that her daughter, a student of class II, was coming from her school on Oct 10, 2003, when Ghulam Dastgir alias Bhutto dragged her to nearby fields and raped her.

The area people came to the rescue of the girl after hearing her cries while the accused managed to escape. The girl identified Ghulam Dastgir before the panchayat and the case was registered but the police refused to arrest the accused.

The mother alleged that Dr Yasmeen of the Gujranwala District Hospital destroyed the blood stained cloths of her daughter and did not mention in the medical report that the girl was raped.

She prayed the court to take notice of the matter.—PPI
