FAISALABAD, Nov 23: The Punjab Teachers Union has termed the education policies of the government harmful for the future of the younger generation and against the interests of teaching community as well.
The PTU at a meeting, presided over by district president Hafiz Ghulam Mohyuddin here on Sunday, observed that the present regime had failed to resolve the problems of the teachers.
Union leaders Azhar Bahzad, Mukhtar Ahmad, Basharat Ali, Abdul Ghafoor, Jawed Iqbal, Abdul Razaq and others spoke at the meeting.
They said all previous governments had usurped the rights of teachers and could not launch a target-oriented education policy due to which literacy rate was on the decline.
They alleged that the present government was presenting wrong figures about the progress in the education sector. Billions of rupees were being misappropriated by the government on account of education funds from local resources as well as donations received from international agencies.
“The present education system is on the verge of collapse as no positive steps are being taken to modernize it,” they added.
They said that the government had refused to provide annual bonus to the teachers on the occasion of Eidul Fitr. On the other hand, the pay and allowances of parliamentarians had been increased by 107 per cent.
They also criticized the role of the federal finance minister in allocation of funds for the educational institutions besides financial benefits for the teaching community.
They alleged that policies were being prepared for the interests of international donor agencies instead of the welfare of poor teachers.
They urged President Gen Pervez Musharraf to take stock of the situation and direct the authorities concerned to prepare comprehensive education policy containing maximum financial benefits for the teachers.

Qalib Abbas was on his way home on a motorcycle after closing his clinic when he was intercepted by three armed men. The interceptors snatched cash and a wristwatch from him and opened fire on him when he resisted. He sustained bullet injuries and died while being taken to hospital.
