PORT ELIZABETH (South Africa) Nov 21: Former South Africa captain Kepler Wessels has continued his strong denial of the racism claims that led to his suspension as coach of Eastern Province.

Wessels issued a statement through his lawyers on Friday angrily denying the accusation against him, made by two players from his own squad.

“I emphatically deny the incident took place or that I ever uttered any words remotely approximating the words that I am accused of uttering,” Wessels said.

Details of the incident have become clearer since Wessels’s lawyers obtained a sworn affidavit from the white cricketer to whom Wessels is alleged to have made a racist remark about two black players.

The Eastern Province Herald newspaper said on Friday that Wessels is alleged to have told Johann Louw at a net practice on Oct 23: “Stop talking nonsense to those two animals, I want you to bowl now.”

Louw was with team players Lyall Meyer and Deon Carolus at the time.

Louw, however, has provided Wessels’s legal team with a sworn affidavit saying “the incident never took place,” according to the newspaper.—Reuters
