HYDERABAD, Nov 21: The president of Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan, Sindh, and Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal Supreme Council member, MNA Dr Sahibzada Abul Khair Mohammad Zubair, has said that the cut in power tariff as announced by the prime minister is insignificant and does not relieve the people.
In a statement faxed to Dawn here on Thursday, he said that a reduction of four and a half paisas per unit was nothing when compared to the otherwise high power tariff and added that due to the high rates, many industrials unit were lying closed while others were on the brink of shutting down.
He said the prime minister had announced a reduction of 11 paisas per unit in the tariff last year but the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority, on the other hand, had increased the tariff by 14 paisas.
The MNA said that unemployment and price hike had already burdened the poor people and the increase in power tariff and issuance of detection bills had further added to their miseries.
He asserted that if the government was really interested in providing relief to the people, then it should withdraw the increase in the tariff made during the last three years.
Dr Zubair demanded that there should be a uniform rate of tariff which would also help in reducing incidents of power theft.
ARRESTED: Two employees of the office of the Registrar of Firms, Wahdat Colony, were arrested by the anti- corruption establishment, Hyderabad city, while accepting bribe of Rs3,000 here on Friday in the presence of a magistrate.
ACE circle office had registered the complaint of Abdur Rehman Shaikh who said that a senior clerk of the Registrar’s office, Aijaz Ali Memon, had demanded Rs5,000 from him for the registration of his firm.
He further said that after bargaining, the bribe was reduced to Rs3,000 which he promised to pay on Nov 21.
The ACE arranged a raid in the presence of Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate Ali Ahmed Jan and a Musheer, Kaleemullah, and recovered Rs3,000 from an office assistant, Mushtaq Ahmed, which were given to him by the senior clerk.
Registration documents of the complainant were also recovered from Aijaz.
The police arrested the accused and locked them up at the Hussainabad police station.
DEMO: Activists of Pasban held a demonstration on Friday outside the local press club to protest against the killing of two children in Larkana.
Speaking on the occasion, Pasban leaders Mohammad Hussain Khan, Shafiq Ahmed Qureshi, Mohammad Nasir and Imran Karim termed the Larkana incident a resounding slap on the face of the government of Sindh.
They said that due to the indifferent and callous attitude of the rulers, killings of innocent people, specially children, had become the order of the day in the province.
The Pasban leaders demanded public hanging of the culprits to serve as an example.
