Govt urged to accept MMA’s proposal

SUKKUR, Nov 19: Sindh Jamaat-i-Islami Amir Dr Mumtaz Ali Memon has said the country can be rescued from the crisis if the government accepts the formula presented by the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal.

He was talking to journalists at an Iftar party hosted by him at a hotel here on Tuesday.

He said the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal had shown maximum flexibility over the issue of the president’s uniform and given him one year to quit the army post.

However, the JI leader said that President Gen Pervez Musharraf seemed reluctant to accept the formula.

He warned that the MMA would go to the people for launching a movement if the government did not accept the formula which was, according to him, finalized by a joint negotiating team of the government and the religious parties’ alliance.

Dr Memon said the government should present the Legal Framework Order in parliament in the one-month time given to it by the MMA.

He described the MMA stand on the LFO as positive and based on ground realities and said the alliance was determined to protect the democratic process and parliament.

He said as the country was facing internal and external threats to its security, it could not afford confrontation at this stage.

He stressed the need for resolving the crisis which, according to him, were created due to the stubborn attitude of the government.

The JI leader condemned the deteriorating law and order situation in Sindh, saying the recent killing of two children in Larkana had created a sense of insecurity in the interior of Sindh.

He said Sindh needed a bold leadership that could resolve problems like unemployment, water shortage and improve the law and order situation.

The MMA leader said despite the lifting of ban on recruitment, no strategy had been evolved regarding employment and there were reports of appointments being made by the Sindh ministers without observing merit.

He accused the Muttahida Qaumi Movement ministers and advisers of patronizing extortionists in Karachi and said bureaucrats in the interior of Sindh were acting on their orders. He said they threatened officials with transfers to remote areas if they refused to obey their orders.

He said the JI stood for establishing an exploitation-free society, based on justice and equality. In this regard he gave the example of Karachi which, according to him, had regained its glory under the leadership of City Nazim Naimatullah Khan.

Dr Memon claimed that the MMA government in the NWFP had set an example of good governance for the rest of the country. He said it guaranteed jobs and justice to the people and because of its social and economic policies, the Frontier province had become a model for the other provinces.

He also introduced newly-elected office-bearers of the Sindh JI.

The office-bearers included deputy Ameer Mumtaz Hussain Sehto, general-secretary Rashid Naseem, Shabab-i-Milli president Khair Mohammad Tunio, political bureau chief Abdul Hafeez Bijarani and information secretary Mujahid Channa.

He also informed the journalists about the recent procedural changes in the setup of provincial bodies of the JI under which office-bearers who held their offices for two consecutive terms would not be elected for a third term.
