Rapid response: SMS app introduced by Rangers for school security

KARACHI: Sindh Rangers on Saturday announced the introduction of a cellphone application designed to provide security to about '3000 schools of Karachi'

In a press conference with Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh on Information in attendance, a senior Rangers official, Colonel Qaiser, announced that the system designed to support the application will help educational institutions in the metropolis alert law enforcers in case of an emergency.

"In case of any emergency or untoward situation, the head of the educational institution is advised to send a message to the system," said Qaiser.

He added the message will be received at the central command (Rangers HQ) and also the cell phones of the zone's company commander, wing commander and the sector commander. It will facilitate a rapid response. Colonel Qaiser stated the system also allows deployment of additional personnel if necessary.

Named 'Rangers School College Protection System', so far 3,000 schools have been registered with the system. Other schools can also apply for induction into the system.

"In future, we will add hospitals, shopping malls and media houses into the system," said the Rangers official.

'Security concerns' have forced closure of many schools in Karachi and other parts of Pakistan after an attack on Bacha Khan University (BKU) earlier this year.

Last month, the paramilitary force announced a WhatsApp helpline allowing the people of Karachi to send text, videos and pictures related to any criminal or illegal activity to the force.

The paramilitary force had requested citizens to send information about terrorism, extortion and any kind of illegal or supicious activity to their WhatsApp number 0316-2369996 or email them at rangers.madadgar@gmail.com, adding that the force is able to curtail such activities in the city with people's support through their telephone helpline 1101.

Its a good decision but just wondering isn't it police job to do. If police is so irrelevant then we should get rid of them and hand over all responsibilities to Rangers.

@Karachitee ... ... Only young men in Pakistan don't want to join the Rangers. It's too dangerous. Why aren't airborne rangers ready to be dropped into trouble spots. All US Rangers have been through six weeks of airborne parachute training at Fort Bragg. Transport planes can drop paratroops any where in Pakistan in a few hours. If there is an attack on a school why not saturate and search the area with paratroops dropped from the sky? Your war is inside Pakistan, not outside Pakistan.

An excellent undertaking.I salute Pakistan Army for its brainstorming to create such force to be at beck and call of all Schools of Karachi to meet ever increasing challenge of terrorism.Only Rangers can deliver.Our police is badly led and highly politicized.It is beyond them.This system should be introduced throughout the country so that our children feel safe.The present half hearted system of security by School administration is an eye-wash.Well done Sindh Rangers.

Shouldn't Sindh Rangers carry out the cleansing of Karachi and bring the Karachi Operation to an end? Its been on going since 2013. Armed forces are ideally for border security and external threats.

It is indeed a very positive initiative by Sindh Rangers.Schools,Colleges and Universities must be protected from the nefarious designs of prospective terrorists.This system should be put in place throughout the country.The slogan should be"we would safe guard our alma maters and our children at all cost"Security of our educational institutions is beyond the capability of the administration of those institutions(unfortunately).Pakistan Army/Sindh Rangers Zindabad.

this is simply a public relations response to the smear inflicted from custodial killing. lets hope we can have a proper inquiry into how a guy was tortured by pakistani rangers! and i hope it is not like the last pathetic inquiry over a rangers jawan shooting a civilian at point blank range in a park with hundreds of witnesses around.
