GILGIT, Nov 16: Over 16 members of the Gilgit district on Saturday elected their third chairman during a period of four years as the slot was vacant after the resignation of former chairman Ali Yar Khan.

New chairman Abdul Karim was elected unanimously by council members.

Official sources said there was uncertainty, financial mismanagement and abuse of powers during the tenure of the former chairmen which caused split among council members and they divided into groups for tabling no confidence motions.

They said elections for the next council would be held in October next year.

SEMINAR: Speakers at a seminar on “Independence of Gilgit- Baltistan: myth or reality” have said there is need for more research on the real history of Gilgit-Baltistan.

The seminar was organized by the Liberal Forum Pakistan on Saturday.
