KARACHI, Nov 13: An anti-terrorism court sentenced three men to death on Thursday for kidnapping a man for ransom.
Judge ARshad Noor Khan of the ATC-3 also ordered the confiscation of the accused persons’ properties, worth Rs100,000 each.
The case pertained to the kidnapping of Mohammed Bilal Shahzad, son of a businessman, who was released after the payment of Rs450,000 as ransom on June 12.
Three accused, Shahzad alias Haider Ali, Abdul Jabbar and Ahmed Hussain alias Immi, were prosecuted and six other accused — Arshad alias Pappu, son of Haji Laloo, Rustum, Zeeshan alias Burger, Shahzad alias Shahji, Haji Ameen and Abu Sufiyan — were declared absconding accused.
The court ordered that the case against the absconding accused be kept on dormant till their arrest.
The 18-year-old victim was kidnapped near Boat Basin on June 5 as he parked his car in front of a eating house. His paternal uncle, Imran Ijaz, and elder brother, Faraz Zafar, negotiated with his captors, who took the ransom money at a desolate place near Aladin Park.
Special public prosecutor, Naimat Ali Randhawa, examined, in all, nine prosecution witnesses.
CASE AGAINST LJ MEN: An anti-terrorism court put off the hearing of a sectarian murder case against the chief of the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi and his three alleged associates.
Judge Haq Nawaz Jhangvi of the ATC-5, who is holding the trial inside the Juvenile Jail, fixed November 18 for the next hearing after on the defence counsel sought adjournment.
LJ chief Akram Lahori and his two alleged associates, Muhammed Azam and Ataullah, have been charged with the killing of a juice centre owner on May 25, 2002 in Rizvia Society.
The trial had restarted last week after a three-month pause as it was earlier being tried by the ATC-4. The court, however, became vacant after the repatriation of presiding judge, Khan Pervaiz Chang, to the Sindh High Court.
