LAHORE, Nov 11: A student and a passerby were shot at and injured on Tuesday in connection with a clash between two politically motivated groups at the Railway Road College in Gowalmandi.

Police said a PML-N students’ group, headed by Shabbar Gujjar, and the other of the PML-Q, headed by Afzaal Gujjar, had a clash on the college premises. The former was said to be dominating the college politics for years and the latter wanted to break it, they said.

During an exchange of firing between the two groups, four of the students suffered bullet injuries. The police took 25 students into custody, and registered a case against them.

On Tuesday, Nauman, a student of Shabbar group, was on his way home at Lohari when his rival, Khalid Babbar, opened fire on him. Nauman and a passerby, Abbas, suffered bullet injuries and were admitted to the Mayo Hospital where their condition was stated to be critical.

Meanwhile, the police have been deployed around the college building to avoid any further clash. The department high-ups said their negotiations with the college administration and the student groups were under way.

BUS OVERTURNS: A college student died and 16 others suffered injuries, three of them serious, when their bus overturned at Butt Chowk in Green Town on Tuesday.

Police said the bus of Raiwind Road Polytechnic College, with around 25 students on board, overturned when the driver lost control over steering due to speeding as a result of which 17 of them sustained injuries.

Police and residents of the area pulled the injured out of the wreckage and rushed them to the Jinnah Hospital. Kashif Ali, 23, died soon after arrival. Of the 16 other students, 13 were discharged after treatment, while three were operated upon and their condition was stated to be critical.

The body was handed over to the family without autopsy.
