SRINAGAR, Nov 9: Ten people including two children were killed in separate incidents in held Kashmir overnight and on Sunday, a police spokesman said.

Two children were killed in a border village when Pakistani troops reportedly fired mortar shells, the spokesman said.

The incident occurred at about 3pm (0230pm PST) in Udhalgund, about a kilometre from Kargil, where Indian troops and insurgents fought a bloody battle in 1999, killing 1,000 people on both sides.

In Sunday’s ongoing shelling, six-year-old Ghulam Mohammed and 10-year-old Mohammed Salim were killed when a shell hit them. Three other children were injured. Three houses were also damaged, the spokesman said.

In other violence, three militants and two Indian soldiers were killed in an overnight encounter in Poonch district while one soldier was killed in Baramulla and two militants in Kathua district, the spokesman said.—AFP
