13 killed as van plunges into canal near Changa Manga

KASUR: At least 13 passengers, including four women and a child, drowned when a passenger van plunged into a canal near Changa Manga on Saturday.

According to details shared by police, the van was heading towards Pattoki from Chhanga Manga when it skidded off a bridge near Waan Aadan due to tyre burst and fell into Balloki-Sulemanki Link Canal.

As a result, 13 persons, including eight men, four women and a child, drowned while 10 others were rescued. The rescued passengers were shifted to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital, Pattoki, for treatment.

Police personnel and rescue teams immediately reached the site of the incident. Meanwhile, volunteers and passersby helped them shift the injured and dead to the hospital.

The bodies were moved to the local hospital for medico-legal formalities.

Pakistan has one of the world’s worst records for fatal traffic accidents, blamed on poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.

In recent days, the country has witnessed a sharp rise in the number of such deadly accidents.

Life in Pakistan has become miserable and its value is nothing more than an animal. The whole system is collapsed and only elite people are enjoying the hard earned money of poor people who even do not have any security.

We shall have to limit number of vehicles on roads by prescribing thorough periodic vehicle examinations that should issue a valid certificate of all the vehicles on road with expiry dates. Then, we must have speed governors installed, limiting the maximum speed of all public and private transport vehicles. The drivers should be randomly checked for their alertness, as it is often observed the accidents are result of their dozing off due to fatigue and sleeplessness.

In Punjab kids were burnt alive in van supreme court made decision on poor transport vehicles and safety measures but the blood of kids could not wake up the govt transport in most of Punjab except of Lahore is miserable poorly transplant gas cylinders overloading and weary roads are not rectified local small Toyota vans have not even condutors in local areas.

Why did the tire burst? was it a very old tire? Sure the transporter and the operator are responsible. But in addition to that, is not it the responsibility of Ministry of Transport to ensure that all vehicles, specifically public vehicles, are road worthy before they hit the road? Who issued a fitness certificate to this vehicle with a weak tire? Unless we start pinning the responsibility where it belongs, we will continue losing valuable lives like this unfortunate incidents.

That can change if you can enforce that law. But the question is, do you really want to to do that because then the law applies to you as well?

Shame on those who place nails on the roads in order to get puncture fixing work. This government is under constant criticism for building metros by the opposition parties. I blame the opposition parties for poor roads and accidents who neglected roads during their rule and those whose priorities are just hospitals.
