Published November 5, 2003

LAHORE, Nov 4: Left-arm paceman Irfan Pathan, named Man-of-the-Match, produced an astonishing spell of nine wickets for 16 — the best of the tournament — to guide India into the final of Under-19 Asia Cup, defeating Bangladesh by 189 runs at the Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday.

Irfan sent down 7.5 overs, including three maidens as Bangladesh were skittled out for 34 in 14.5 overs while chasing India’s total 223.

Irfan, who had taken three wickets each against Pakistan (3- 23) and Sri Lanka (3-61), has so far claimed 15 wickets for 100 runs in the tournament.

Bangladesh captain Nafees Iqbal Khan was the highest scorer with nine runs while extras top scored with 10. Five of the Bangladeshi batsmen failed to score.

Earlier,  Bangladesh’s skipper Saghir Hossain won  the  toss and elected to field.

Bangladesh did well to remove India’s top four batsmen for 40 but found it difficult to dislodge the middle order.

Top scorer Dinesh Karthik (77) and Suresh Raina (47) steadied the Indian innings puting on 120 in 106 minutes for the fifth wicket. Karthik hit 11 boundaries for his 101-ball knock while Raina smashed five fours and faced 67 deliveries.
